LEADER stands for “Liaison Entre Actions de Développement de l’Économie Rurale” (Link between Actions for the Development of the Rural Economy) and is a methodological approach within the framework of the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD).
Since 1991, the European Union has supported model projects in rural areas with the LEADER approach. In the so-called LEADER regions, local people can help to shape processes. Local action groups (LAGs) determine the LEADER process and are thus the engine of regional development.
In the current funding period, there are 321 LAGs nationwide; across Europe there are about 2600 regions. Networking and cooperation are key goals of LEADER. Both the networking within the region and the view beyond the horizon – in other regions – should be promoted.
